Federal Rescheduling of Cannabis: Benefits for Public Health, Research, and the U.S. Economy For more than 50 years, cannabis has been classified as a Schedule I substance  under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), a category reserved for drugs deemed to have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. This classification has increasingly conflicted with modern science, medical practice, state cannabis laws, and public opinion. In August 2023, the U.S. Department
